Why should you employ disabled people?
Disabled people are currently a hugely untapped resource in the employment market. Like most people we want to have work that interests us and that uses our strengths. We are motivated to work and desire to be a valued member of your workforce. Some disabled people may have developed particular skills through their life experience. Skills that could be an asset to your business! Valuing diversity in your workforce may actually assist your organisation in developing new and better ways to complete your core activities.
Your attitude makes the difference
The key to employing us depends on your having a positive attitude. Sometimes a bit of creative thinking is priceless! Other staff will take their cues from you. By valuing a disabled person on your staff positively, other staff will accept us too. Over time people shift from seeing the disability, to getting to know the person.
Sometimes disabled people need extra support. Don t worry - there is a lot of assistance available to help you make the employer-disabled employee partnership successful.
- The greatest ways you can assist disabled employees:
- Understand the person and the impact their impairment has on their daily life
- Treat this employee the same as you would any other employee
- Find ways to adapt tasks if needed there are organisations around with the expertise to advise you
- Encourage interaction between all staff
- Educate your staff in disability awareness EML: Michelle Hill at CCS Disability Action for further information
- Accept any support the person receives, e.g. assistance from a job support worker, technological equipment or mobility aids, including a guide dog they may use
